This ring is designed as an open band around the finger. Here we have taken inspiration from the myths surrounding the Viking Age sorceresses, the Völvor. In graves believed to belong to Völvor, staffs have been found with metal pendants. Here we take such a pendant and reshape it into a ring. The brass is soft and flexible enough that the ring can be adjusted in size as needed.

All our brass jewelry is nickel- and cadmium-free and handmade by skilled craftsmen.

Measurements & Materials

Materials: Brass and silver plated brass
Size: Customizable. In the picture, about 2 cm in diameter.
All Nordlys jewelry is nickel and cadmium free. Today, brass is a mixture of copper and zinc.
During the Viking Age, copper was mixed with tin in different proportions to get the same gold-like color that brass has.

Care

Brass and silver oxidize over time and become darker in colour. To gently clean silver-plated brass specifically, you can do so with aluminum foil and boiling hot water. This chemical process removes oxidation (tarnish) without damaging the plating through harsh rubbing.
How to do it (baking soda and foil method):
Line a bowl: Line the bottom of a bowl (not metal) with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
Place the item: Place the silver-plated brass item on the foil.
Baking soda: Sprinkle about 2–4 tablespoons of baking soda over it.
Pour water: Pour boiling water over it until it covers the item.
Action: Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, or until the water has cooled.
Rinse & dry: Rinse thoroughly in water and dry with a soft cloth, polish lightly for shine.
Important to consider:
This method removes silver sulfide (the black tarnish) but works best if the item is clean from dirt and grease first.
Do not use this method on jewellery with glued stones or beads, as the heat can damage the glue.
If the silver plating is very thin or worn, be careful not to let the brass underneath show through.
