Tuned jaw harp in brass
We find that these items are often purchased together with this product:
Our tuned jaw harps are handmade from brass. The size of this slightly simpler variant is 10x4 centimeters, which is a bit larger than the most commonly found examples from the Viking Age. The size produces a good sound with slightly faster vibrations. The jaw harp is available in several keys, choose the one that best fits your music.
The jaw harp, also known as the mouth harp and jaw harp, is one of the world's oldest instruments. It has spread from its origin in the Ural Mountains to large parts of the world in various forms. The jaw harp came to Europe during the Iron Age/early Middle Ages, and finds from the Viking Age exist in, among others, Denmark and Norway. On Gotland, a bronze jaw harp from the Iron Age has been found.
Our jaw harps are hand-forged by members of the Nepali musician caste. They have made a living for thousands of years by playing traditional music. Their traditions also include making their instruments. In modern society, interest in live traditional music is declining. As a result, musicians are now a vulnerable population in an already poor country. Every jaw harp sold supports their work to continue living in accordance with their traditions.
