The Gjallar warhorn
The Viking sagas tell how the god Heimdall used his horn to warn the other gods of danger and to bring messages to humans. In the Icelandic sagas, the horn is described as a war instrument, used both to direct troops and to scare the enemy. Different types of horns have been found during excavations of warships, among other places. The oldest find of a horn in Sweden is about 2000 years old and thus predates the Viking Age. Our horn is approximately 35-50 cm long and handmade from a single piece of natural horn, with a carved mouthpiece at the tip. It is played using a technique similar to that of a trumpet.
