The Viking sagas tell how the god Heimdall used his blowing horn to warn the other gods of danger and to bring messages to mankind. In the Icelandic sagas, the horn is described as an instrument of war, used both to command the troops and to frighten the enemy. Various types of horns have, among other places, been found in excavations of warships. The oldest find of a blowing horn in Sweden is approx. 2000 years old and thus older than the Viking Age. Our horn is roughly 35-50 cm long and handmade from natural horn in a single piece, with a carved mouthpiece at the tip. You play it using roughly the same technique as a trumpet.
