Runornas magi

The magic of runes

Our ancestors communicated with Runes. Runes were the writing system of the Norse people, which was also believed to have a magical significance. They were used, for example, to convey events,  feats, meetings, write love letters, resolve disputes, various kinds of divination, such as it could be good to know how the harvest would turn out that year,  love, spells, and everyday magic.

 Magical runes and their meanings.

In the Edda it is told that Odin gains the knowledge of the runes through great suffering. He was wounded, hung upside down, and received no food or drink for nine days.

Despite this, the price seemed worth paying considering the immense knowledge, magic and power  the runes brought.

Our ancestors communicated with signs, and the belief was that the runes possessed magical powers. These characters were their written language.

Runes were the first alphabet of the Norse people. The letters, or rather the runes, were carved into wood, bone or stone. The oldest runic carvings in the Nordic countries date from the beginning of our era (in Sweden from the 3rd century) and are carved with an older runic alphabet that had 24 runic characters. These older characters are sometimes called Proto-Norse runes, because the language spoken in the Nordic countries at this time (c. 150-800 AD) is usually called Proto-Norse.

The rune row is called the "futhark". Each rune has a name, and the rune row is named after the first six runes. The futhark thus got its name in the same way as the alphabet , after the first characters in the alphabet.

Runes were the written language of the Norse people; they were used, for example, to record events, exploits and meetings, to write love letters, settle disputes, and for various kinds of divination — for instance, it could be good to know how the harvest would turn out that year,  or matters of love, spells and everyday magic.

Divining with runes was, and still is for many, a simple tool to turn to when you want quick answers, advice, where your focus should be here and now, current and coming events or your present life situation.

”Runa” means secret.

The oldest, 24-character Proto-Norse rune row is still in use as a divination tool.

It was often the Völva of the village who held this knowledge.

In Norse mythology they have strong associations with wisdom, magic and health.

There are several runic alphabets from different cultures; it is the Elder Futhark that is described here.

It contains 24 runes and one blank rune.
The runes served as written characters but also as symbols with a special magical meaning.

How old are the runes?

The runic characters were created about 2000 years ago, that is, around the time of the birth of Christ. The oldest preserved runic inscriptions date from the 2nd century AD.
