Gutland Viking Sword
Sverige 1000-talet
This sword is made using the same methods that the Vikings used 1000 years ago. It is a hand-forged copy of a typical Viking sword from the 11th century, the original is found on Gotland. The blade is semi-sharp, forged in high-quality carbon steel, hardened with oil and tempered in the traditional way, over a coal seam. This is done so that the blade will be both flexible and strong. The blade is also marked with Nordlys' "blacksmith mark" so you can be sure that you have a real sword from our forge.
The hilt has a leather-wrapped grip and typically Viking-shaped button and hilt.
The scabbard is made in the traditional way with a wooden core bound with black leather and with a bronze scabbard shoe in Viking-era design. The sword scabbard has a belt bridge in wood and is decorated with both inserts under the leather and brown braided leather straps.
The Viking warrior typically had two belts for the sword, one over the opposite shoulder and one around the waist. The two belts relieved and distributed the weight of the sword and ran through a bickle on the scabbard called a belt bridge.
